Four Luxury Yachts Changing Travel at Sea
The newest generation of luxury yachts is changing what it means to take a cruise. The Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons, Aman and Orient Express are creating experiences where the yacht itself can matter as much as the places it visits.
These are not simply smaller versions of conventional cruise ships. They are designed around spacious suites, highly personalized service, destination-led dining and the freedom to treat a day on board as part of the vacation rather than time between ports.
How luxury yacht travel feels different
On a conventional cruise, the itinerary often determines the value of the trip. Guests select a sailing for its ports, excursions and the number of destinations they can cover.
These luxury yachts reverse that relationship. You can go ashore when something interests you, but you never have to leave the yacht simply because it has reached another port. A marina day, a long lunch, a spa afternoon or an uninterrupted day on your private terrace can be the experience.
The atmosphere is also more residential. Passenger numbers are lower, public spaces are quieter and the suites are designed for travelers who want to spend meaningful time in them. If you are still deciding whether this style of travel suits you, my guide to ocean cruising for the discerning traveler explains what separates an intimate ship from the conventional cruise experience.
The four luxury yacht lines at a glance
| Yacht line | Guest capacity | Standout feature | Best for | Fare style |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection | 298 to 452, depending on the yacht | Three-yacht choice and an aft Marina with direct sea access | Travelers wanting an established, polished yacht experience | Most dining, premium beverages, Wi-Fi and gratuities included |
| Four Seasons Yachts | 222 total occupancy | Transverse marina and highly configurable residential suites | Families, groups and multigenerational celebrations | Breakfast and selected beverages included; most other dining charged separately |
| Aman at Sea | 94 guests | Two-storey Aman Spa and an exceptionally private atmosphere | Privacy, wellness and quiet time aboard | Selected dining, gratuities and laundry included |
| Orient Express Sailing Yachts | 110 guests | Three SolidSails and a genuine wind-powered sailing experience | French style, grand design and the romance of sailing | Highly inclusive, including dining, beverages, butler service and laundry |
The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection
The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection is the most established of the four and currently offers three yachts. Evrima carries up to 298 guests in 149 suites, while Ilma and Luminara accommodate approximately 450 guests in 224 and 226 suites respectively.
This choice is one of the collection’s greatest strengths. Evrima provides the most intimate experience, while Ilma and Luminara offer more restaurants, larger public spaces and some exceptionally spacious upper-suite categories.
The standout: The Marina is the collection’s defining feature. On Ilma and Luminara, an expanded platform opens directly onto the water while the yacht is at anchor, creating a private beach-club atmosphere with loungers, watersports and alfresco dining close to the sea. Additionally, the The Marina Terrace offers an open-air, 270-degree panoramic lounge area, also at sea level
Most dining, premium beverages, Wi-Fi, gratuities and in-suite dining are included. The result feels polished and established, with enough choice to remain interesting during a voyage - yet without the overwhelming scale of a conventional cruise ship.
Ritz Kids makes the yachts workable for families, although children generally represent a small proportion of the guests. The families best suited to this experience are those with well-traveled children who are comfortable dining and spending time in refined, largely adult-oriented spaces.
I would steer travelers toward The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection when they want the reassurance of an established operation, several yacht and itinerary choices, and an experience that balances resort-style service with genuine access to the water.
Four Seasons Yachts
Four Seasons I has 95 suites and an official total occupancy of 222 guests, giving it one of the highest suite-to-guest space ratios in this group. The accommodations feel more like residences than cabins, with private terraces, large bathrooms and extensive connecting possibilities.
Some suites can be combined into substantial multibedroom configurations, making Four Seasons particularly compelling for families, groups of friends and multigenerational celebrations. The three-bedroom Loft Suite can connect with neighboring suites to accommodate a group of up to 20 guests, while the nearly 10,000-square-foot Funnel Suite sits at the very top of the accommodation range.
The standout: Four Seasons has created a first-of-its-kind transverse marina that opens across both the port and starboard sides of the yacht. On dedicated marina days, it becomes a waterside platform for swimming, watersports and lounging at sea level.
Four Seasons also provides one of the strongest family propositions in this category, with thoughtful spaces for children and teenagers alongside the brand’s familiar spa, fitness and service experience. Families who already enjoy Four Seasons resorts should find the transition to the yacht particularly natural.
The pricing is structured more like a luxury resort stay than a traditional all-inclusive cruise. Breakfast, selected nonalcoholic beverages and Wi-Fi are included, while most lunches, dinners and alcoholic drinks are charged separately.
I would recommend Four Seasons Yachts most strongly for multigenerational families, milestone celebrations and travelers who want highly configurable accommodations. It is also the best fit for guests who enjoy having resort-style flexibility rather than an entirely bundled cruise fare.
Not sure which yacht matches the way you travel?
I can help you narrow down the choices to the experience that fits you.
HELP ME CHOOSEAman at Sea
Aman will bring its signature privacy and stillness to the ocean aboard Amangati, scheduled to begin sailing in 2027. The yacht will accommodate only 94 guests in 47 suites, all with private terraces.
The small guest count is central to its appeal. Amangati is designed for travelers who value space, discretion and a quiet rhythm more than a long schedule of entertainment or organized activities.
The standout: Amangati will have a two-storey Aman Spa, described as the largest spa in luxury yachting. It will include a Japanese serenity garden, ocean-facing treatment rooms, a hammam, banya, yoga and meditation areas, while the top Aman Suite will have its own private spa.
Japanese ryokan influences appear throughout the interiors, reinforcing the sense that Amangati is intended to feel like an Aman sanctuary placed on the water. Restaurants, a marina, infinity pool, cinema, jazz club and intimate lounges provide variety without changing that calm atmosphere.
Selected dining, gratuities and laundry are included, while specialty restaurant dinners, most alcoholic beverages, additional in-suite dining, spa treatments and shore experiences are priced separately.
I would recommend Aman at Sea for couples, privacy-focused travelers and existing Aman guests who want the yacht to function as a destination in its own right. This is the clearest choice for someone whose ideal day involves wellness, space and unhurried service rather than a full program of activities.
Orient Express Sailing Yachts
Orient Express Corinthian accommodates up to 110 guests in 54 suites. Although it is the largest vessel in this comparison by length, its limited guest count, expansive suites and butler service create a far more private experience than its scale suggests. The interiors interpret the glamour of the Orient Express trains through a distinctly French lens. Dining is directed by multi-Michelin-starred chef Yannick Alléno, while the Guerlain Spa brings another major French luxury house into the experience.
The standout: Corinthian is designed as a complete world of French art de vivre at sea. Its restaurants, Guerlain wellness, cabaret-style theater, cinema, library and recording studio give the yacht a cultural identity that extends well beyond beautiful accommodation. The three SolidSails give Corinthian a visual identity unlike any other yacht in the group, but their importance is atmospheric as much as technical. They reinforce the romance and sense of occasion that Orient Express is creating around the journey.
This is a yacht on which the evening matters as much as the afternoon. Guests can move from a spa treatment and a long lunch to live entertainment, private dining or drinks without the experience feeling like a conventional cruise schedule.
The fare is also the most inclusive of the four. Dining, wines and spirits, in-suite dining, butler service, entertainment and laundry are included, allowing guests to enjoy the yacht without continually considering additional charges.
I would recommend Orient Express for travelers who value gastronomy, design and cultured evenings as much as the destinations themselves. It is the strongest choice for someone who wants the journey to feel glamorous, social and unmistakably European.
Arriving in Style
On these yachts, the transition between vessel and shore is treated as part of the experience rather than a purely functional transfer. The way guests arrive, depart and explore from the water reflects each brand’s personality, from discreet Ritz-Carlton service and Aman’s private helipads to the purpose-built limousine tenders of Four Seasons and Orient Express.
The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection
The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection takes an understated approach, with familiar Ritz-Carlton hospitality continuing from the yacht to the shore. The aft Marina and Marina Terrace bring guests close to the water, while crew-assisted transfers make days ashore feel like a natural extension of life onboard. The emphasis is less on making the tender itself the attraction and more on creating a smooth, polished transition between the yacht and the destination.
Four Seasons Yachts
Four Seasons transforms the tender into an experience of its own. Its custom-built Limo Tender resembles a private floating salon, with a beautifully finished interior, sheltered seating and even a concealed champagne service. It can be used for transfers as well as personalized coastal outings, allowing guests to leave the yacht for a waterfront lunch, secluded cove or spontaneous afternoon ashore without stepping outside the Four Seasons experience.
Aman at Sea
Amangati offers the most dramatic arrival option of the four, with two dedicated helipads designed to accommodate private helicopter arrivals and departures in select locations. For guests who choose it, the journey can move almost seamlessly from private aircraft to yacht, with the Aman team coordinating the details in advance. Guests arriving by water will have access to the yacht’s tenders and expansive marina, creating a quieter but equally refined transition between Amangati and the shore.
Orient Express Sailing Yachts
Orient Express Corinthian uses purpose-built Pascoe limousine tenders to carry guests between the yacht and shore when anchored offshore. Designed for 14 to 16 passengers, they combine plush interiors, quiet performance and sheltered comfort with the glamour associated with the Orient Express name. The result is not simply a boat ride into port, but an elegant continuation of the onboard experience, ensuring that the romance of Corinthian does not end when guests step away from the yacht.
The Mind Shift: The Itinerary Is Not the Main Event
The fundamental mindset shift with these yachts is that the vessel can come before the ports. Instead of beginning with a list of destinations, begin by considering how you want your days to feel, who you are traveling with and where you would happily spend an entire week even if you never went ashore.
For travelers who love exceptional hotels, this is the appeal. The yacht becomes a floating resort with beautiful suites, thoughtful service, destination-worthy restaurants, expansive spas, elegant pools and private access to the sea. Unlike a land-based hotel, however, the view beyond your terrace changes constantly, from a quiet Mediterranean cove one morning to the lights of a historic harbor the next.
A strong itinerary still adds richness to the journey, but it does not control it. Some of my most discerning, well-traveled clients are not interested in collecting ports or filling every day with organized experiences. They may go ashore for a private lunch or a particularly special cultural experience, then remain aboard at the next port and enjoy the yacht while its pools, restaurants, spa and marina feel almost private.
That freedom is one of the greatest luxuries these yachts offer. You are not paying simply to be transported between destinations. You are choosing an extraordinary place to stay, with the rare advantage that the scenery, atmosphere and possibilities beyond its doors are continually changing.
Which luxury yacht would I choose?
The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection is my recommendation for travelers who want the broadest choice of yachts and itineraries within an already established operation. Evrima offers greater intimacy, while Ilma and Luminara provide more space and an expanded resort experience.
Four Seasons is the strongest choice for families, groups and milestone celebrations because its connecting suites can create genuine private residences at sea. Its transverse marina also makes days spent at anchor a central part of the voyage.
Aman is the most compelling option for privacy and wellness. With only 94 guests and an extraordinary two-storey spa, Amangati is designed for travelers who want a quiet sanctuary rather than a busy social scene.
Orient Express is the choice for travelers who want the romance of a real sailing yacht. Its SolidSails, French design and highly inclusive experience give it the strongest sense of occasion.
Let the yacht become part of the destination
Whether you want a private wellness sanctuary, a multigenerational residence at sea or the romance of a true sailing yacht, I can match you with the right voyage and suite.
